The character reference slot takes one image of a character — your drawing, a generated portrait, a mascot — and makes it the basis for the character in your game.

How to use it

1

Open the references panel

In the prompt composer, open the references area and pick the Character reference slot (one image, up to 10 MB).
2

Upload the character

Best results come from a clear, front-facing view of a single character on a simple background, showing the full body if you want a full-body game character.
3

Say what the character does

In the prompt, give the character a role: “this is the player character”, “make this the shopkeeper NPC”.

What happens with it

  • In 2D games, the reference drives the character’s sprite design and animations.
  • In 3D games, the reference makes an AI generated 3D model of the character consistent with your image, rigged for the game.
The character reference also stays in the AI’s visual context for the session, so related assets (portraits, UI icons) stay consistent with it.

Tips

  • One character per reference image — collages confuse the AI.
  • The art style of your character and your style references should agree; if they don’t, say which one wins.
Character references guide generation of a new character asset. If you have a finished 3D model you want used verbatim, upload it as a custom asset instead (Max plan).
